I found the Ranchero under tons of bird guano
in a ladder barn at a cherry local orchard. The man told me
it ran but was just worn out. I gave $300 for it and towed
it home. A couple of hours later it was running but had no
power and was actually sounding like it was missing. The
next days off I did a compression test and discovered after
trying for 30 minutes and two compression testers that the first
two cylinders had zero compression. So I planned on pulling the
head on my next shift turnaround and take it in for valve
work. Oil in the cylinder didn't help at all so was just
sure it had burned up the valves on those two cylinders. I
got to the shop early the morning of the great discovery and
found when I pulled off the valve Cover that the intake and
exhaust valve of number one and number two cylinders had spit out
their pushroods and were jammed up under the rockers in an x
configuration, holding the valves open. Twenty minutes and
$12 later she was running like a swiss watch only smoking like a
mosquito fogger. It took about an hour of running to burn
the accumulated carbon and oil buildup off of those two
cylinders. Updates so far...Clifford Hedders and dual
exhause..(sounds like a v-8)...alternator...custom indash
replacement radio am/fm/cassette...power antenna..bench seat with
center arm rest...overload springs...custom Steering wheel and
wheels...it is only a 144
but everyone around town thiks it's a 302...(heh heh heh) well
that is where I'm at at this point on it am going to build a 200
with 3/4 race cam and three one barrels as soon as I get my shop
remodeled..I have acquired a 61 for Kathy so we can cruise in his
and hers cheros..bought two doner cars for parts too..just wish I
could use granada brake system on a round body.
